  • Down 25-3 after the first six matches Thursday night, fourth-ranked (Class 5A) Shawnee came off the mat in style, nipping Cushing 36-31.

Cushing had two falls and two technical falls among its first five wins but over the final eight matches prevailed just once.

Corey Todd launched Shawnee’s comeback with a 4-2 decision at 145, followed by a fall from Matt Daniel at 152.

After Cushing’s Jake Miller registered a pin in just 32 seconds at 160, Shawnee rattled off four victories — falls by Walker Smith (182) and Gage Humphrey (195) and decisions by Thomas Shepard (170) and Robert Selumber (220) — to bring Shawnee within 31-30 entering the heavyweight match.

Cushing didn’t send a heavyweight out to the mat in the only forfeit of the night, giving Shawnee entry Ryan Goodfox the victory and the Wolves the dual victory.

Shawnee also received an early 3-2 win by 113-pounder Bryce O’Connor over Austin Walsh.

“We beat a good team tonight on the road with their homecoming,” Shawnee coach Larry James said. “Everyone of our guys fought tonight.”

Shawnee will compete in the Suburban Conference Finals Tuesday.
