  • A slow first half and 21 points from Perkins-Tryon’s McKenzie Stanford doomed Prague to a 40-18 loss in the 66 Conference Tournament championship game at Perkins-Tryon High School Saturday.

“We couldn’t stop Stanford in the first half,” Prague head coach Jay Depanion said. “We tried to hurry things up and we got a little too rushed.”

Stanford had 10 points before halftime for the host Lady Demons, who remained undefeated on the season at 18-0. Perkins-Tryon is also ranked second in Class 3A.

“They are a very good team,” Depanion added, “and I think it’s very possible we’ll be seeing them again.”

Injuries caused Prague (14-4) to utilize a shorter bench than they are used to, but Depanion said that was “no excuse” for Saturday’s performance.

Whitney Stotler led the Lady Devils with seven points, while Tori Bristow had four.

Jorden Gorham pitched in 10 for Perkins-Tryon.

Prague, ranked ninth in Class 3A, will head to Stroud Tuesday for a match with the Lady Tigers.
