  • A contract between Larkin Aquatics and the city of Shawnee for designing the City Pool has been delayed.

Director of Operations James Bryce explained that Larkin Aquatics is merging with another company, and the Pool Committee was unaware of that when they began negotiations with the company.

Since then, there have been issues with the contract negotiations.

The company, City Attorney Mary Ann Karns, and Bryce had a telephone conference Tuesday, which Bryce said went “well.”

The company will get back to the city with an answer Wednesday morning, he added.

Through the conversation, everything was worked out except “one word” in the contract, Bryce said.

“It is a section of the contract that we cannot do without for the safety of citizens and those using the pool,” Bryce said.

If the company is not willing to accept the contract as it is currently, Bryce will contact his second choice, Waters Edge. Hopefully he will be able to begin negotiations with them, he said.

The current pool cannot be used due to a need for renovations. The pool was built before World War II and did not have many renovations up to now. It was closed several times last summer due to sand leaking in and cracks at the bottom of the pool.
