Brayden Newton recorded a last-second steal Monday to preserve a 45-44 senior-night win for Class 2A’s second-ranked Dale Lady Pirates over Class 4A Newcastle.
The Lady Pirates were up by the final margin with 8 seconds to go, and the Lady Racers got the rebound following a pair of missed Dale free throws. Their push up the court was then thwarted by Newton’s fast hands.
Dale trailed 11-10 after one quarter, but led 20-13 at halftime. Newcastle cut the lead to 31-28 after three quarters, and the Lady Racers mounted a rally down the stretch that fell just short at 16-14.
Newcastle’s Corby Parasich came away with a game-high 13 points. Dale’s Breck Clark netted a dozen points, and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Clark also recorded three steals.
Jaelin Flewallen added 10 points and five boards for the victors, while Lexes Satterwhite and Newton finished with eight points apiece. Satterwhite notched six rebounds and five assists, and Danielle Dockrey finished with four points and five boards.
Flewallen, Satterwhite and Hannah Armitage each picked up a 3-point field goal as the Lady Pirates went 3-for-12 from long range. Dale was 15-for-46 from the field, and 12-for-16 from the free throw line.
Now 23-1, the Lady Pirates will host a Class 2A district tournament Friday and Saturday. They will face the Konawa-Wynnewood winner at 6:30 p.m. Saturday for the district crown.
Dale’s seniors include Clark, Satterwhite and Dockrey, as well as Molly Battershell, Sam Barry and Shelbye Newton.
Dale’s Pirates also picked up a senior-night win Monday, using a 9-for-10 effort at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to notch a 52-47 win over Newcastle.
The Pirates, Class 2A’s fifth-ranked squad, went 20-for-26 (76.9 percent) for the game on charity tosses. Jace Wilkins, who finished with a team-high 15 points for Dale, went 5-for-6 in the fourth quarter en route to finishing at 6-for-8.
Dale’s seniors are Dustin Stark and Evan Anderson. Anderson struck for a double-double Monday with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Stark finished with five points.
“It was nice to send those guys out with a win,” Dale coach Jeff Edmonson said of his seniors. “And now we get to start the playoffs, so it’s like starting a new season.”
