Shawnee 195-pounder Gage Humphrey went 3-0 Friday to move into today’s finals of the Class 5A regional tournament competition at Tulsa Edison High School.
Humphrey launched the day with an overtime (6:19) pin of Grove’s Bill Nixon, then decisioned Piedmont’s Caleb Ritchner 8-2 in the second round. Humphrey earned his finals berth with a 2:54 fall of Riley Smith of McAlester in the semifinals.
Humphrey, the No. 3 seed, will wrestle Collinsville’s Roger Priddy, the No. 1 seed, in today’s finals.
Four other Shawnee grapplers — Corey Todd (145), Matt Daniel (152), Thomas Shepherd (170) and Walker Smith (182) — won their first two matches Friday before bowing in the semifinals. All four must win one consolation match today to advance to next Friday’s state tournament.
Four other Shawnee entrants — Nick Poncho (106), Bryce O’Connor (113), Robert Selumber (220) and Ryan Goodfox (heavyweight) — lost one match apiece Friday and remained alive in the consolation round. All four entrants must win two matches today to earn state tournament berths.
Four Shawnee wrestlers — Michael Smith (120), Bailey Moon (126), Cameron Comer (132), and Clayton Stafford ((138) — dropped two matches Friday and were eliminated from the tournament.
“I thought we wrestled well overall but some matches just didn’t go our way,” Shawnee coach Larry James said. “I think we can advance everybody remaining if we wrestle well.”
Today’s first session is scheduled for noon. The finals are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
