  • Wendi Wells, head coach of Class 5A’s defending state champion Shawnee Lady Wolves, is among 20 Oklahoma coaches selected in their respective sports by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) as a state coach of the year.

The NFHS has recognized coaches through an awards program since 1982. Winners of the awards must be active coaches in the year in which they are selected, and Wells is part of the group selected for the 2011-12 school year.

Wells coached the Lady Wolves to a 29-0 season in 2011-12, which culminated with a state title in their second-ever appearance in a state tournament. The Lady Wolves are currently 21-1 on the 2012-13 season and are Class 5A’s top-ranked team.
