  • No. 5 Savages outlast Star Spencer in 2 OTs

  • Tecumseh’s boys squeezed past Star Spencer in two overtimes, while the Lady Savages were met with a 50-44 defeat Saturday night.

  • Fifth-ranked Tecumseh weathered a Star Spencer challenge and registered an 80-69 two-overtime triumph Saturday night at a Class 4A district tournament.
     
    Regulation play ended at 55-55 when Julio Hukill of Tecumseh hit a two-point field goal, was fouled and hit a free throw with 13 seconds remaining. Star Spencer missed a last-gasp field-goal try to force overtime.
     
    Hukill scored a career-high 39 points, 38 of which came during regulation.
     
    Both teams scored eight points in the first overtime with Tecumseh missing a last-second shot.
     
    The Savages then out-scored Star Spencer 17-6 in the second overtime as Alan Brewer converted two 3-point shot attempts and Darian Permetter hit one trey.
     
    Brewer finished with 19 points on the night.
     
    Tecumseh was 28-of-55 from the field and 19-of-23 from the charity stripe.
     
    “We won without our post player, Colton Owen, who has missed four straight games with an injury,” Tecumseh head coach Eric Litherland said. “Star Spencer missed some crucial free throws in the fourth quarter.”
     
    Tecmseh (21-3) wlll meet Ada at 8 p.m. Thursday in regional competition at Ada. Tecumseh is 3-0 versus Ada this season.
     
    In the girls’ opener, Tecumseh was squared at 35 with Star Spencer after three quarters but some fourth-quarter difficulties led to a 50-44 defeat.
     
    “We had some crucial turnovers in the fourth quarter,” said Tecumseh coach Amy Shelby. “And we missed some easy shots.”
     
    Tecumseh was just 1-of-10 from 3-point range in the game.
     
    Hilary Babbit spearheaded Tecumseh’s scoring attack with 18 points and Gabby Rice finished with nine.
     
    One of the game’s crucial areas came at the free-throw stripe. Star Spencer was 16-of-24, including 8-of-11 in the final quarter. Tecumseh was 7-of-10.
     
    Tecumseh (7-17) will take on Dickson at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in a regional tournament losers bracket game at Ada.
