Gage Humphrey’s bid for a 195-pound regional tournament championship was foiled Saturday night but Shawnee advanced six wrestlers to next week’s Class 5A state tournament.
Top-seeded Keenan Priddy of Collinsville pinned Humphrey in 2:48 in the 195-pound title matchup. Humphrey went 3-0 Friday to earn his finals berth.
Five other SHS entrants — Corey Todd (145), Matt Daniel (152), Thomas Shepard (170), Walker Smith (182) and Ryan Goodfox (heavyweight) — advanced to the state tournament (along with Humphrey) by advancing to Saturday night’s third-place matches. Daniel upended Kelvin Grubbs of Pryor 1-0 for third place and Smith nipped Benny Steffenson of Grove 2-0 for third place. Todd, Shepard and Goodfox came in fourth.
Shawnee’s Nick Poncho (106), Bryce O’Connor (113) and Robert Selumber (220) — who had avoided elimination Friday — saw their state tournament aspirations go awry Saturday.
Selumber pinned Claremore’s Cody Haire in 4:53 to finish fifth. O’Connor was pinned by Fletcher Edwards of Coweta in 2:46 and finished sixth.
The top four finishers at each regional weight advance to the state tournament.
Poncho was eliminated in an earlier consolation match Saturday.
“We were really proud of all of our kids this weekend,” Shawnee coach Larry James said. “We battled hard and that is all we ask them to do each time they take the mat, win or lose.
“We want to go next weekend and have as many champions and placers as we can. We can’t be satisfied for qualifying.”
