  • After going 1-1 on the day Friday to open Class 5A state competition, Shawnee wrestlers Matt Daniel and Walker Smith were defeated in the consolation semifinals Saturday at State Fair Arena.

Daniel, at 152 pounds, was bested by a 7-3 decision against Collinsville’s Jason Haymaker. Smith, at 182, fell 3-1 in three overtimes to Tulsa Kelley’s Jacob Inbody.

Shawnee opened state play Friday with seven entrants.

“We picked a bad time to not wrestle well in a tournament,” said SHS coach Larry James. “We had a good year, but it is still not satisfying when you don’t have any state placers.

“We have five of the six qualifiers coming back, plus some tough kids who were just short.”

Note: Report compiled by Jason Smith.
