  • Four Tri-County teams remain in the hunt for a state title, including Class 5A’s defending champion, the Shawnee Lady Wolves.

The Lady Wolves — who have carried a first-place rank for much of the 2012-13 season — will face Suburban Conference rival Piedmont at 8 p.m. today at Edmond North High School to begin area tournament play. A win will advance Shawnee to next weekend’s state tournament, while a loss will force them into a must-win situation Saturday against the winner between Del City and Ardmore.

Piedmont was an early challenge for Shawnee this season as the then third-ranked Lady Wolves edged the Lady Wildcats 62-57 in double overtime on Dec. 4.

Shawnee ended the regular season at 7-1 in Suburban Conference play, and the Lady Wolves enter the area tournament at 23-2 overall.

Also entering area play this week are Dale’s Lady Pirates, Class 2A’s second-ranked crew. The Lady Pirates, regional champions by way of a 34-24 win over Amber-Pocasset, are 26-1 to entering Friday’s 6:30 p.m. tip against Fairview at Anadarko.

A win will put Dale in next weekend’s state tournament, while a loss today will move the Lady Pirates into a must-win bout Saturday.

At the Class 4A level, Tecumseh’s boys will take on Blanchard at 8 p.m. today in an area losers’ bracket contest at Chickasha. The fifth-ranked Savages are 23-4 going up against the No. 10 Lions (21-5).

Tecumseh was poised to take the regional crown before No. 17 Ada derailed those plans. The Savages were 3-0 versus the Cougars on the season, but lost 57-46 in a regional opener last week.

Tecumseh went on to top Newcastle 60-43 in the first of two must-win games, and the Savages blistered Cache by an 81-58 count on Feb. 23 to secure a spot in area play.

The Savages must win three in a row now to earn a state tournament appearance next week.

Class 3A’s No. 13 Prague Lady Red Devils will take on Kingfisher at 6:30 p.m. today at Purcell in an area losers’ bracket game. The Lady Devils were dropped into the losers’ bracket via a 48-39 loss to Plainview Feb. 23, and Kingfisher earned its spot in area play by dropping Meeker 67-39 Tuesday.

That loss brought Meeker’s season to an end.

Prague must win three to reach state, and a win today will move the Lady Red Devils into a 1:30 p.m. contest Friday against the winner of Lindsay and Washington.
