  • Promoted to brigadier general

  • Oklahoma Army National Guardsman Col. Percy "Sonny" G. Hurtado will be promoted to the rank of brigadier general today

  • Oklahoma Army National Guardsman Col. Percy "Sonny" G. Hurtado will be promoted to the rank of brigadier general today at the Oklahoma National Guard's Regional Training Institute.
     
    The promotion ceremony will be held in the Education Building at the Regional Training Institute at 2:30 p.m. today. Media should arrive at least 15 minutes early. The Regional Training Institute is located at 6500 N. Kelley Ave. in Oklahoma City.
     
    Hurtado was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Field Artillery in 1983 through McNeese State in Lake Charles, La., where he earned a Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice. He also holds a Masters of Science in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College and a Masters of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from Oklahoma City University.
     
    Hurtado has held a number of key command positions to include battalion commander for the 1st Battalion, 171st Field Artillery; Afghanistan regional security integration commander-Kabul, Afghanistan; and, commander of the 45th Fires Brigade.
     
    His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Parachutist Badge.
     
    Following his promotion, Hurtado will deploy to Afghanistan where he will serve as the deputy commander-police, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) training mission.
     
    In his civilian career, Hurtado has served with the Oklahoma City Police Department for more than 20 years and is currently a patrol supervisor and field training officer supervisor. He and his wife, Susan, reside in Oklahoma City.
