Shawnee’s Lady Wolves opened their 2013 season Saturday with a third-place finish at the Carl Albert Tournament, held at the OKC Tennis Center.
No. 1 singles entrant Meagan Hanson and No. 2 doubles entrants Shelbe Fennell and Shannon Spillers each went 3-1 on the day. Hanson — with wins over Briana Patterson of Carl Albert (6-1, 6-0), Heidi Kuruvilla of Guthrie (6-1, 6-0) and Kyndal Heath of Mustang (6-1, 6-0) — claimed third place.
Fennell and Spillers picked up wins over pairs from Guthrie (7-6, 6-3), Putnam City North (6-0, 6-1) and Altus (6-3, 7-5) to earn consolation honors.
“We did pretty good,” said SHS coach Terry Woodward. “We just need to play and get more match time in. I think we’ll get stronger.”
Woodward credited Hanson with having “a good day” Saturday.
At No. 2 singles, Shawnee’s Meg Reeder took fourth with a 2-2 day. She picked up wins over Carl Albert’s Cassidi Gooch (7-5, 6-3) and Yukon’s Kaylee Mach (6-4, 6-1).
McKenzie Lumry and Emily Stobbe, at No. 1 doubles, also took fourth with a 2-2 outing. They defeated duos from Chickasha (6-1, 6-0) and Norman (6-1, 6-2).
Shawnee’s boys’ and girls’ teams will go to Ardmore Tuesday.
