Contestants from McLoud and Asher captured the top honors in the heifer competition of the Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show this week.
Avrie Nowakowski, 9, and a member of the McLoud 4-H, showed the Supreme heifer. She’s the daughter of Sam and Jennifer Nowakowski and is a fourth grader at McLoud Elementary.
Showing the reserve supreme heifer was another 9-year-old, Stephanie Johnson, of the Asher 4-H Club. She is a second grader at Asher, she said, and she’s the daughter of Jared and Teresa Luman.
Nowakowski, whose heifer stepped on her foot toward the end of the competition, fought back tears from the pain as she said she was surprised that her heifer QD captured the top honors.
She’s been showing for two years, she said, and this is her first Supreme heifer award which automatically qualifies her for tonight’s premium sale.
For Johnson, this is her first year to show. Her reserve supreme award also placed her in tonight’s sale. She said “it feels good” and that she works hard to qualify for the sale.
Nowakowski’s award was sponsored by Grissoms, LLC and Johnson’s award was sponsored by First United Bank Shawnee and First United Bank Tecumseh.
Earning the grand steer championship honors in the beef competition was Kylee Burris, Dale FFA. Kaleb Nowakowski, McLoud 4-H, won the reserve grand champion steer award.
Showing the grand champion prospect steer was Nichole Sullivan, Bethel FFA.
Each of those three also automatically qualified for the sale.
Burris’ award was sponsored by BancFirst. Chisholm Trail Farm Credit sponsored the reserve grand champion honors.
Sponsoring the grand prospect steer award was Jeff Walkingstick, Brown and Brown Insurance Agency of Central Oklahoma.
Kylee Burris also won the Intermediate Showmanship Award in the beef competition. Her award was sponsored by State Rep. Tom Newell.
Hadley Griffith, Shawnee FFA, earned the Junior Showmanship Award in the beef show and her award was sponsored by Grissoms, LLC.
Hannah Armitage, Dale 4-H, won the Senior showmanship honors in the beef competition and her award was sponsored by Gilbert Insurance Agency.
The 76th annual show, sponsored by the Greater Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, concludes this evening with the Premium Sale.
