  • A suspect who allegedly assaulted a store clerk and fled from Shawnee police sought refuge on a house rooftop Tuesday afternoon before he jumped and resisted arrest.
A police report shows it was about 1:08 p.m. when police were notified about the manager being assaulted by a shoplifter at Wall's Bargain Center on North Harrison.
The suspect fled the store, with police responding to search the nearby neighborhood after a resident on Rice Road reported a man in her backyard.
Police searched the area, where the suspect was spotted jumping over fences before climbing onto the roof of a home on Bingham Circle.
Several officers and firefighters surrounded the residence and attempted to talk to the suspect, identified in the report as Charles Andrew Wallace, but he allegedly jumped off the roof and landed on a hot tub cover. He further resisted arrest, the report shows, by fighting with several officers on the ground. The home sustained some minor damage during the incident.
Wallace, 22, was booked into the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center on complaints of assault and battery, petit larceny, attempting to elude, resisting an officer and malicious injury to property. Formal charges have not been filed.
According to the report, Wallace walked out the south door of the store, which sounded an alarm, so he was asked to go to the office area. The manager reported Wallace initially complied, but when they called police, reported that Wallace pushed the manager and knocked her into a door so he could flee.
Items taken from Wall's included earphones and a SD card totaling $64.98, the report shows, but the stolen property wasn't recovered.
    Watch for any updates.
