  • Premium sale establishes new record

  • The Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show premium sale surpasses previous record by around $10,000.

  • Final figures are in and the premium sale of the Pottawatomie County's Junior Livestock Premium has set a nee record.
     
    Nancy Keith, president and CEO of the Greater Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, said figures finalized this week totaled $144,119. That is around $10,000 more than the sale brought in about three yeas ago.
     
    Preliminary figures provided the night of the sale a couple of weeks ago had it bringing $136,875 for the 110 4-H and FFA students who qualified for the sale.
     
    Of the $144,119 total, $86,975 was generated trough the bidding. The remainder, $57,144, came from add-ons.
     
    When contacted, Suzanne Gilbert, co-chairperson of the Agri-Business Youth Development Committee of the chamber said “Oh WOW! Incredible. You know I always say when you have a good product to start with like our FFA & 4-H kids the rest is easy. The kids are the cream of the crop and work hard all year long with their projects.
     
    “We are very fortunate to live in a community where we have an outstanding Chamber of Commerce that sponsors the show, a fantastic Agri-Business committee that works year round because they believe in these students to make the show what it is and a business community that believes in the end result and comes out to support these students. It just goes to show that hard work does pay off!”
     
    There were two single premiums of $4,000 each paid during the sale.
     
    McKenzie Strickland’s champion Simmental heifer brought $4,000 paid by C. Anderson, Inc., The Trailer Ranch and Rope the Rockies. Chesley Steward’s first place commercial heifer also brought $4,000 paid by Shawnee Animal Hospital, Steward Propane, D&D Trucking and BancFirst.
     
    Strickland is a member of the Tecumseh FFA and Steward is a member of the Bethel FFA.
