First Christian Church slates Holy week services.

First Christian Schedules Holy Week Services

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will begin Holy Week Services this Sunday as the church will observe Palm/Passion Sunday.

Palm/Passion Sunday was traditionally Palm Sunday, but in recent years as many churches dropped Holy Week services, churches went from the celebration of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem to the celebration of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Going from celebration to celebration ended up leaving out the most important part of Holy Week—the Passion of Christ on the cross.

The service on Sunday will begin with the traditional entry of the palms into the sanctuary with people celebrating Jesus as king.

The service will then move toward Friday of that same week when many of those same people were crying out for Jesus to be crucified.

Pastor Ray Belford’s sermon title for Sunday will be “He Could Have” and the text will be Luke 19:28-40 and Philippians 2:5-11.

Maundy Thursday will be observed in a special service beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday evening. Maundy, which means “covenant”, will focus on the Last Supper of Jesus that He shared in the upper room with His disciples.

The service will look at each of the disciples and is based on Twelve Ordinary Men by John MacArthur. The service will conclude with a sharing in Communion where Jesus introduced the new covenant and the call for us to remember Him when we share the bread and the cup. In the Disciples of Christ denomination, Communion is celebrated every Sunday.

Following the service, a 60-hour Easter Prayer Vigil will begin with members praying continuously until first service on Easter morning. Members sign up for one-hour periods to pray in the church library during the vigil.

The Resurrection of the Lord will be observed on Easter Sunday, March 31.

Belford’s sermon title for Easter is “Remember His Words.” It is based on the resurrection story from Luke 24:1-12.

Sunday services at First Christian Church are at 8:30 a.m. for first service and 10:50 a.m. for second service. Sunday School hour begins at 9:30 a.m. The church is located at 1625 N. Broadway and all services are open to the public.
