Autopsy results are still awaited for two Bethel Acres teenagers who were found dead at a Texas ranch where they allegedly attempted a home invasion on Wednesday.
Kenneth Chaffin, 17, and Dillon King, 18, died Wednesday in Maypearl, Texas in Ellis County, which is south of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Wednesday, deputies here in Pottawatomie County issued a national alert for Chaffin, a runaway. Undersheriff Travis Palmer said Chaffin reportedly left his Bethel home driving his parents’ 1991 red Ford Ranger pickup and taking with him prescription medications, about 17 firearms and nearly 2,000 rounds of ammunition,
That afternoon, Chaffin, along with King, reportedly went to a rural ranch in Texas, where an attempted home invasion resulted in them exchanging gunfire with the homeowners, according to reports there.
As the two suspects fled toward a field, they allegedly fired at the home. Palmer said the husband returned fire and the woman called 911. Sheriff's deputies arrived and found one suspect dead in the field and the other inside the stolen pickup truck.
Ellis County, Texas, Sheriff Johnny Brown said officials think both teens died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds at the scene, but said the homeowner did fire two deer rifles during the ordeal, striking one of the teens.
“I'm thoroughly convinced that had they not had a way to defend themselves, it would have turned out a different direction,” Brown said.
Pottawatomie County Undersheriff Travis Palmer said Chaffin and King were identified through photographs and King’s distinctive tattoos.
The teens lived about a mile apart in Bethel Acres but deputies had no idea the two were together when Chaffin was reported as a runaway, Palmer said, adding that King had not been reported missing.
Chaffin’s father, Roland Chaffin, told reporters his that son had never been in trouble with the law and had no family problems before he ran away.
“My son's not an angel. I'm not saying that he is,” Roland Chaffin said. “But the Kenneth we know was not capable of this.”
