  • Bethel’s girls handed Class 6A second-ranked Westmoore its first setback of the season Thursday with a 13-8 decision at the Norman Festival.

Ranked sixth in 5A, Bethel jumped out to an 8-0 lead over two innings, saw its lead dwindle to 8-7 after four, then went on a late spurt to move to 8-6 on the season.

The upset over Westmoore came after an earlier 9-1 victory over Norman North in six innings.

Against Westmoore, Bethel compiled 18 hits with Cati Caro driving in five runs with a double, a single and a three-run homer, the latter in the first inning as the Lady Wildcats tallied five runs. Cherokee Moore had a two-run homer in the first.

Meghan Tade notched three singles in the inning while Rachel Wade posted three RBI on two singles. Also notching two singles apiece were Bethel sisters Shelby and Bayli Miller.

Opposite Norman North, Bethel combined six hits with 10 walks. Taylor Short went 3-of-4 with two doubles. Ashley Elmore ripped a three-run triple in the first inning as Bethel netted five runs.

“The win over Westmoore was huge for us,” Bethel coach Casey Brewer said. “We couldn’t hit our way out of a paper bag in the first game but our bats woke up in the second game.”

Bethel will travel to Seminole today for an 11 a.m. doubleheader. The Lady Wildcats will be idle Saturday.
