  • Byng struck for four runs in the top of the third inning, then staved off Bethel 5-3 Saturday at the Jones Tournament.

After Byng’s first two batters were retired in the third, the Pirates put together a walk, a single, a throwing error and a three-run home run.

Hunter Heath’s double on a misplayed fly ball in the bottom of the third brought Bethel within 4-1. After Byng went up 5-1, Heath made it 5-2 with a solo homer leading off the sixth.

Garret Fitzgerald drove in Bethel’s final run on a seventh-inning double.

Heath went 3-of-4 while Fitzgerald was 2-of-4.

Losing hurler Marcus Washburn surrendered just two earned runs in a complete-game performance. He fanned four and walked four.

Byng is ranked sixth in Class 4A.

“Marcus did a good job. He pitched well enough for us to win,” Bethel coach Todd Brown said. “Byng is an elite team in 4A. Their pitcher today has one of the better arms we’ve seen this year. This was a good experience for us.”

Bethel went to 12-5 and Byng raised its mark to 11-5.

Bethel will travel to Meeker Monday, then play at Piedmont Tuesday.
