Tecumseh watched as a 5-0 lead was quelled and Ponca City recorded a 6-5 win over the Savages Saturday in the final game of the Shawnee Showdown at Memorial Park.
Class 4A’s No. 12 Tecumseh finished the event at 1-2, having lost 5-2 to Dale Thursday before topping Western Heights 4-2 Saturday.
Jake Smiley went the distance against Western Heights. He struck out seven and did not permit a walk in moving to 4-2.
The Savages led the Jets 1-0 after one inning, and 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth. Western Heights tied it there at 2-all, and Tecumseh went on to add the game’s final two runs in the top of the seventh.
Tecumseh was held to just three hits — two singles by Micah Sanchez and a run-scoring single by Rylan Pierce. The Jets committed two errors while Tecumseh played without a blemish.
Tecumseh broke a scoreless deadlock opposite Ponca City with a single run in the bottom of the second inning, and the Savages were out in front 5-0 by the end of the fourth. The Wildcats — ranked 20th in Class 6A — got to within two runs (5-3) in the top of the fifth before adding the last three runs of the game in the top of the seventh.
Tecumseh miscued four times to Ponca City’s one error.
Gage Trahan threw all seven for the Savages. He fanned eight and did not issue a walk in falling to 3-2.
Ponca City’s Sam Raglin picked up the win in relief.
Of Tecumseh’s 10 hits, Trahan clubbed two singles and Alan Brewer went 2-for-4 with a single, a double and two runs batted in. Connor Patton hit a run-scoring double.
Now 13-6, Tecumseh will travel to Harrah for a 4:30 p.m. game Monday.
