  • OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The chairman of the Oklahoma Republican Party is taking a position with the Republican National Committee.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus (ryns PREE'-bus) announced in a news release Wednesday that Matt Pinnell (pih-NELL') has been named the organization's state party director, its chief liaison between the RNC and state parties.

Pinnell announced last month that he wouldn't run for a third term as state chairman after his current term expires on April 20.

During his tenure, Republicans captured every statewide elected office from Democrats in the 2010 elections, and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney won all 77 counties in the 2012 presidential election.

Republicans also have been closing the registration gap in Oklahoma, with Democrats now making up about 46 percent of Oklahoma's electorate compared to 43 percent for the GOP.
