  • Youth and Family Services was awarded a grant from the Sarkey’s Foundation to assist in expanding and refurbishing their current playground area.

“This old playground was very small,” Director Sharon Trammell said.

The plan is to use the lot owned by Youth and Family Services to expand the area, as well as bring in more equipment. The new playground will include a walking track, swing sets and slides.

“There’s even enough room for them to play catch,” Trammell said.

Additionally the space will include a gardening area, and an area for older children.

Trammell said the space for older children was added after asking the children in their care what they wanted out of the area.

“We felt like we covered all of the age groups,” she said.

In addition to receiving the entire amount requested, Youth and Family Services has also been the subject of several fundraisers, including the recent 14 Hours of Hope fundraiser in which local artist, LeAnne Henry Wright worked with her students to create and auction off paintings, with all proceeds benefitting Youth and Family Services.

“The community always comes forward for us,” Trammell said.

While she isn’t yet sure when the funding will come through to begin work, Trammell hopes it will be soon.

“We’re very, very excited,” she said. “It’s going to be a lot of work, but it’s going to be worth it.”
