  • It was cold and it was windy, but Shawnee ended its soccer seasons on a high note Tuesday as the Wolves and Lady Wolves recorded wins over Collinsville at Jim Thorpe Stadium.

The Lady Wolves led 1-0 at halftime en route to a 2-0 victory, and the Wolves led 2-0 at the break before finishing with a 2-1 win over the Cardinals.

For the Lady Wolves, Chelsea Evans scored unassisted after dribbling past two defenders at the 20-minute mark of the opening half. Jordan Leach, with 25 minutes to go, scored Shawnee’s second goal — also unassisted.

Lauren Mackey posted seven saves in goal for Shawnee, which ended the season at 8-5 overall and 3-4 in district play.

“We’ve had a lot of ups and downs this season. We were really young,” said Lady Wolves’ coach Justin McCain. “But our last couple of games, they really started to click.”

McCain said all of his starters will return next season, and the team has “a lot of momentum and promise for next year.”

In the boys’ game, Shawnee’s Jacob Floyd was assisted by Alec Young to put the home team up 1-0. Young scored on a penalty kick for the 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals scored the game’s final goal with 15 minutes to play.

“We were defending against a strong wind in the second half,” said Wolves’ coach Paul Marshall.

The Wolves, who finish at 5-8 overall and 3-4 in the district, ended their season on a two-game winning streak. They were 5-1 at home.

“We had a pretty good year this year,” Marshall said. “We just need to learn how to win on the road.”

Marshall will also have all of his starters back next season, “which is really good,” he said. “I’m looking forward to that.”

Marshall said he is “very pleased” with his crew.

“They’re a great bunch of kids. They were fun to coach this year,” he said.

Both Shawnee teams celebrated senior night Tuesday. Seniors on the girls’ team are Darrian Bingham, Melanie Birchett and Amy Hays, and seniors on the boys’ team are Anthony Palacio, Solomon Blanchard, Martin Marshall and Gage Prewitt.
