  • Class 3A second-ranked Vian handed Class 2A top-ranked Dale its first shutout of the season Thursday with a 4-0 decision.

Vian’s four runs came on two home runs, both of the two-run variety, in the top of the seventh inning.

Dale’s three previous losses had been to Latta (11-2), Ponca City (7-3) and Rattan (17-1).

“We didn’t advance a runner to third base,” Dale coach Jerry Sanford said. “We hit it hard a couple of times but it was right at them. They’re a good team and their kid threw well.”

Losing pitcher Jace Wilkins permitted five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Wilkins fanned nine, walked two and hit one batter.

Dale, 22-4, has another stern test at 4:30 p.m. today at Verdigris. Verdigris is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.

Saturday, Dale will travel to 6A Southmoore.
