Shawnee finished with 33 team points and tied for third with Guthrie Monday in a regional tournament at Heritage Hall, and the Lady Wolves have qualified for the Class 5A state tournament to be held May 3 at the OKC Tennis Center.
“We’ve been building up to this moment since January,” said SHS assistant coach Doug Wells. “They are all peaking at the right time. We are looking forward to what could do in the state tournament.”
Host Heritage Hall was the regional champ at 43 points, and Deer Creek was second at 34.
Shawnee’s Med Reeder, at No. 2 singles, finished the day at 1-1 was in second place. She received a first-match bye, then defeated Guthrie’s Heidi Kuruvilla, 6-2, 6-2.
At No. 1 singles, Meagan Hanson went 3-1 and took third place. She topped Chelsea Nelson of Capitol Hill (6-0, 6-0); Brandi Piper of Western Heights (6-0, 6-0); and Cheyenne Royal of Guthrie (6-0 6-0).
At No. 1 doubles, Shawnee’s McKenzie Lumry and Emily Stobbe recorded a 3-1 day and took third. They defeated duos from Western Heights (6-1, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-4) and Northwest Classen (6-2, 6-0).
Shelbe Fennell and Kaylan Storie, at No. 2 doubles, went 2-2 and finished fourth. Their wins were against NW Classen (6-1, 6-2) and Western Heights (6-3, 6-0).
Shawnee’s boys will be in regional competition Monday, May 6.
