Asher’s Lady Indians reached the Class B state slow-pitch semifinals Tuesday before suffering an 11-3 setback to eventual champion Leedey at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
It was the second time in as many years that Asher reached the state semis, and the second time in a row that the Lady Indians were knocked out of contention by the eventual champion. It was Red Oak that defeated Asher in the 2012 semis, and Red Oak was unsuccessful in defending its title as Leedey took the crown Tuesday with an 8-6 final.
Asher, ranked fifth in Class B, reached the semifinals via a 16-6 thrashing of third-ranked Tupelo in the quarterfinals. The game was stopped after six innings on the run rule.
Asher dished out 14 hits to Tupelo’s nine, and that offense included a triple apiece from Alisha Huggins, Sarah Wauahdooah and Haylee Andrews.
Huggins was 3-for-4 in the game, while Kasadi Reimers and Wauahdooah were each 2-for-4. Reimers slugged a double and drove in four runs, and Andrews’ triple netted two runs.
Shayla Dekuyper and Brandi Doshier added two singles apiece for Asher.
Tupelo suffered from six errors.
Second-ranked Leedey, who defeated Buffalo Valley 14-2 in the quarterfinals, never trailed against Asher. The Lady Bison out-hit the Lady Indians 16-10.
Haley Odell collected a double, and Doshier and Huggins notched two singles each.
Asher committed four errors to Leedey’s two.
In other Class B state quarterfinals games Tuesday, Red Oak hammered Arnett 12-2 and Hammon blasted Eagletown 11-2. Red Oak defeated Hammon in the semifinals, 12-8.
Asher ends the season at 25-10, and bids farewell to seniors Reimers, Huggins and Doshier.
“I wish we could have played one more, but I’m pleased with our accomplishments,” said Asher coach Tari Dubler. “It was a great season.”
In other Tri-County softball action, defending champion and top-ranked Dale will face quarterfinals opponent Latta at 11:15 a.m. today in the Class 4A state tournament at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. Bethel’s Lady Wildcats will take on Purcell at 1:45 p.m. today in the Class 5A state quarterfinals.
Dale defeated Latta 13-2 in the 2012 championship game.
