A 79-year-old man is confirmed dead in the Shawnee area after a tornado swept through the area Sunday evening.
Pottawatomie County Sheriff Mike Booth confirmed the fatality occurred in Steelman Estates, a mobile home community located off SH 102 and Independence Street.
In that area alone, Booth said 30 to 35 home were destroyed.
Booth said the man’s identity wasn’t being released until his relatives could be notified.
Search efforts were ongoing Sunday night in the tornado-ravaged areas, Booth said, and plans are in place to run search dogs through the area today as a precautionary measure.
“There’s places completely leveled — all kinds of debris,” the sheriff said.
Along with Steelman Estates, Booth said there was extensive damage in areas west of Shawnee Twin Lakes, including Fishmarket Road and the County Line, along with areas near Garrett’s Lake Road and U.S.177.
Damage assessment teams will disburse today to catalog all areas of damage.
    Watch for updates.
