  • The Tourism Advisory Committee, which advises the Shawnee Convention and Visitors Bureau, voted to rescind an amount awarded to support the first Glory Daze Spectacular.

The event, intended to give the community of Shawnee a large Independence Day celebration, will be hosted June 29 at the Oklahoma Heart of Exposition Center.

Due to the International Finals Youth Rodeo being the following weekend, hosting the event on July 4 wasn’t possible.

John Ayers, the event sponsor, initially approached the Tourism Advisory Committee requesting $10,000 for his event. Because it’s a first time event, Ayers was granted $750, as is standard for the committee with first time events.

The funding came with guidelines of including the SCVB logo on all advertising, which Ayers did not do when he printed the posters, SCVB Executive Director Kinlee Farris said.

Farris said in the meeting she tried several times to contact Ayers and talk to him about the advertising, and tried several times after the posters had been printed. After many unsuccessful attempts, Farris did get to talk to Ayers on the phone. She said she explained that he would either need to reprint the posters and advertisements to include the logo, or the funding would have to be rescinded.

Ayers did not reprint the posters, Farris said.

She said he was very understanding, and Farris added that she is confident he will be able to receive funding next year.

Due to the fact that the requirements were expressed in the guidelines, the committee voted to rescind the funding.

Ayers was not at the meeting to comment. The event is still scheduled for June 29 at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center.
