  • A Michigan man was killed Thursday morning when the tractor-trailer rig he was riding in rear-ended another semi truck on the Turner Turnpike east of Chandler.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol closed the westbound lanes on Interstate 44 between Stroud and Chandler for about two hours to work the scene of that crash.
Larry Barrett, 61, of Zeeland, Mich., a passenger in one of the rigs, died at the scene from massive injuries, the OHP reported.
The accident occurred about 10:13 a.m. at mile marker 166.5, where traffic was slowed down because of debris in the roadway.
Troopers said a 2006 International tractor-trailer rig driven by Ronald Ray Reed, 61, Tulsa, had slowed down for the debris in the roadway.
A 2012 Volvo tractor-trailer rig, driven by Rodger Wylie, 48, Grand Rapids, Mich., failed to slow down, causing his rig to hit the rear-end of the International semi, the patrol reported.
Wylie was transported to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City with multiple injuries and was admitted in critical condition, the OHP said. Barrett, who was Wylie’s passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers reported that Reed refused any medical treatment for minor injuries at the scene.
Cause of the collision is listed on the trooper’ report as inattention.
The OHP said seat belts were in use by both drivers, the report shows, but a seat belt was not in use by Barrett.
