Southpaw Tanner Nelson hurled a splendid route-going two-hitter Friday night as Dale nipped Latta 1-0 at the Dale Tournament.

Nelson allowed a single to the leadoff batter of the game, then permitted only one other single as Dale improved to 2-0. Nelson fanned five and didn’t issue a walk as the Pirates advanced to tonight’s 6:30 championship game against Asher.

“Tanner threw the ball really well,” Dale coach Jerry Sanford said. “He was always throwing a first-pitch strike and getting ahead in the count.”

Dale scored the sole run in the bottom of the first inning. Gunnar Hathcock drilled a one-out double down the left-field line, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout to second by Chase Byndas.

The Pirates loaded the bases with one out in the sixth before a strikeout and a fly-out concluded the threat.

Dale’s junior varsity squad defeated Okarche 12-3 in another Friday tournament outing. The JV squad will round out its tournament slate at 2 p.m. today.
