  • Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon (R-Lawton) issued the following statement today in remembrance of the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington:

“The 1963 March on Washington was an example of how citizens of this country can unite behind a cause that defines a nation’s character. The march was a pivotal moment in the struggle for equality during the Civil Rights movement and led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Today, we celebrate the incredible progress we have made as a nation during the last 50 years, but our work is not yet done. My hope, as well as the hopes of millions of Americans, is that we continue to march toward realizing the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and all those who struggled with him for equality, acceptance and freedom. As Dr. King once said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
