  • Class 5A’s fourth-ranked Deer Creek forged an early 31-0 lead en route to taming the seventh-ranked Wolves 41-21 in Shawnee’s home opener at Jim Thorpe Stadium.

Shawnee was able to trim the deficit to 31-7 by halftime on an 8-yard scoring toss from John Jacobs to Cole Humphrey, and Jacobs went on to finish the game with 302 passing yards on a 25-for-46 outing.

Turnovers troubled the home team as the Wolves (1-1) lost three of five fumbles and Jacobs was intercepted twice. Deer Creek quarterback Caden Sander was a solid 21-for-29 with no picks, and the Antlers lost only one of three fumbles.

Deer Creek posted just over 500 total yards of offense — 254 passing and 252 rushing on 38 attempts.

Shawnee logged 120 rushing yards on 32 attempts for an offensive total of 422 on the night.

Deer Creek led 38-7 in the third quarter on a 1-yard plunge by Marcus Coleman, but the Wolves got two TDs back to trail 38-21 going into the fourth. Jacobs ran one in from 3 yards out, then later hooked up with Humphrey for the duo’s second scoring connection — this one worth 27 yards.

Shawnee’s Kade Dixon hit all three of his point-after kicks.

Deer Creek’s Dillon Noble was 5-for-5 on PATs, and added field goals of 55 yards and 20 yards — the latter being the final score of the night.

The win pushes Deer Creek to 2-0.

Shawnee’s homestand continues through the next two weeks. The Wolves will host Ponca City for homecoming at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, and they will host Tulsa Memorial at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, for their District 5A-3 opener.
