The city of Shawnee is hoping for a break on repairs at Shawnee Twin Lakes. This week repairs were finished on a floating fishing dock damaged in the May 19 tornado.
This fishing dock was a replacement for the fishing dock that was destroyed in 2010 at the same location, Director of Operations James Bryce said.
It took almost two years to replace the fishing dock when it was destroyed in 2010.
“It took some time to go through the process of getting it replaced,” Bryce said.
He explained that the dock has to be designed and funded, as well as bid out and built.
The bid to replace the dock was awarded Aug. 6, 2012, and the dock was completed and opened not long after.
However the dock was on the water for less than a year before it was closed due to damage from the May 19 tornado. Lakes No. 1 and 2 were both hit, and the fishing dock was damaged. Additionally a maintenance building was destroyed.
The repairs on the dock were much faster this time because the damage was not as extensive, and was repairable. Additionally the dock was covered by insurance, so funding was not an issue.
