  • Andrew Browning’s interception on the game’s final play allowed Maud to escape with a 43-42 victory over Arkoma in a frenzied District C-4 matchup Friday night.

Arkoma, trailing 43-42 with 32 seconds to play, gained possession near midfield.

The visitors drove inside the Maud 20 only to have Browning claim his third interception of the night — this one in the end zone.

Maud led 7-6 in the first quarter, then didn’t have another advantage until it was 35-34 at the 2:59 mark of the third quarter.

A 5-yard scoring run and a two-point conversion run — both by Nick Simons — gave Maud a 43-34 lead late in the game. Arkoma scored with 2:04 remaining to make it 43-42 and set up the dramatic ending.

Maud, 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the district, rushed for 270 yards, including 96 yards on 18 carries for Andrew Browning. Simons netted three touchdowns and finished with 67 yards on 14 carries.

Eric Browning rushed for 64 yards on 11 attempts and caught a 51-yard scoring toss from Andrew Browning. Eric Browning caught four passes for 71 yards. Teammate Devin Brewer had TD catches of 21 and 11 yards.

Maud, after giving up 179 yards rushing in the opening half, permitted only 23 the second half.

“Arkoma is really, really talented and athletic,” Maud coach Bruce Harrell said. “The kids kept fighting. We told them to weather the storm I thought we wore them down a little in the second half.”

Maud will continue its district schedule Friday night at fourth-ranked Thackerville.
