Class A’s No. 2 Dale went 2-0 on the day Saturday, dropping Class B’s fourth-ranked Verden (7-2) and Class A’s fifth-ranked Sterling (3-2) in a three-way contest.
Dale fended off a 2-all tie after three innings with Verden and led 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth. The Pirates added four runs worth of insurance in the sixth.
Dalton Tillison tossed a complete-game one-hitter that included 11 strikeouts. Tillison (3-1) walked four, and both of Verden’s runs were earned.
Xavier Lanham was the offensive spark with a two-run home run in the second inning, and teammate Gage Ross went 2-for-3 with a double. Chase Byndas added a pair of singles.
Dale again was tied at 2, this time in the second inning with Sterling, and the Pirates added the winning run in the top of the third frame. Both teams secured three hits, with Skyler Martin going 2-for-4 for the victors.
Jace Wilkins moved to 3-2 on the mound. In four innings of work, he struck out seven, walked five and plunked two batters. Lane Cox closed, striking out two.
Now 18-4, Dale hosts Class B’s No. 18 Tupelo at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
