  • Caleb Dubler and George Merchain combined for a one-hitter against Class A’s top-ranked Byng Monday, and Class B’s second-ranked Asher came away with a 1-0 win.

Dubler, who was credited with the win, held Byng hitless for six innings. He permitted four walks and struck out 11 Pirates, and Merchain did not permit a walk while giving up one hit in the seventh.

Dubler is now 6-1 on the hill, and the Indians are 20-5 overall. The win allowed the Indians to avenge all but one of those losses as they have now topped Byng, Latta, Dale and Roff.

Rattan is the only other team to have bested Asher this season. Asher lost to Byng 5-2 in the finals of this year’s Latta Tournament.

Dubler, Tim Johnson and Tanner Andrews each struck for a pair of singles as Asher finished with eight hits Monday. Corey Holman’s single in the top of the second drove in Andrews for the game’s one and only score.

Asher will host a district tournament Thursday with New Lima and Calvin. New Lima and Calvin will meet first, and Asher will face the loser of that game at 3 p.m. and the New Lima-Calvin winner at 5 p.m.
