Energy-efficient practices is the aim.
OG&E and Oklahoma State University continue their work to incorporate sustainability and energy-efficiency practices throughout the campus. Their most notable efforts resulted in the dedication of the OSU Cowboy Wind Farm in February and now with OG&E recognizing OSU’s largest energy-efficiency project ever.
OG&E will award OSU with a rebate check for $288,069 during an on-field check presentation during the OSU vs. Kansas State game Oct. 5. The project included the replacement of two chiller units in the university’s West Chilled Water Plant with more energy-efficient chillers.
According to James Rosner, P.E., Director Utilities and Energy Management for OSU, the project increased the efficiency of the chillers by 20 percent and will save the campus about $450,000 annually.
For OG&E, the project means more than 10 million kWhs will be saved annually, which helps reduce demand on OG&E’s systems by 1,100 KW.
“Through our wind power and energy efficiency efforts, OSU and OG&E are partners in leading our state in sustainable business practices. Our wind and energy-efficiency efforts help reduce costs at the university and reduce carbon emissions,” said Jesse Langston, Vice President Retail Energy for OG&E. “This particular initiative with OSU accounts for approximately 12 percent of OG&E’s annual energy demand goals and supports our efforts in meeting our goal to avoid building additional fossil-fueled generation until the year 2020.”
“OSU’s purchase of wind power represents the end of an era with the 1940s Central Power Plant going out and renewable energy coming in,” Rosner said. “OG&E has been an integral partner in helping OSU reach our sustainability goals.”
By switching to wind energy from the Cowboy Wind Farm, OSU now ranks 6th in the EPA Green Power Partnerships Top 20 College and University rankings, and the Big 12 ranks the university 2nd in Collegiate Athletic Conferences green power rankings.
