Work to immunize newborns is honored.

The Women’s Center at St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital has been recognized by the Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) for achieving one of the highest rankings in the nation for its work to immunize newborns against the hepatitis B virus.

St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital is the only hospital in Oklahoma on the Immunization Action Coalition’s Hepatitis B Honor Roll, with a coverage rate of 97 percent.

To be included in the honor roll, institutions must meet several guidelines including education of parents, have written policies and procedures to protect newborns from hepatitis B infection prior to hospital discharge and to achieve a coverage rate of 90 percent or greater for giving the hepatitis B vaccine to newborns prior to discharge.

Experts agree that hepatitis B virus infection can be eliminated, and that preventing transmission at birth is fundamental to this effort.
