  • It’s almost time for the “Race for Rylie,” which is scheduled for Tuesday night in Shawnee.
The benefit run is a way to help Rylie Hughey, the 2-year-old daughter of Kevin and Bridget Hughey who is battling cancer.
Kevin Hughey is a Shawnee police officer and his colleagues are among those working to support the family through the fundraiser.
The 5k fundraiser, called “Race for Rylie” will be 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12. The event will be at the Shawnee airport track, 1700 W. Independence. There’s an option for the 5k run or a one-mile fun run.
Shawnee Police Officer Andrew Terry, a close family friend, said they are looking for registrants and donations to help the family.
Rylie had been sick and in June doctors found three masses on her kidneys and diagnosed her with Stage 5 bilateral wilms tumors.
Terry said Bridget Riley, a teacher at Chandler for eight years, has since left her teaching job to be home with Rylie and to take her to receive her ongoing chemotherapy treatments.
Terry said Rylie has undergone surgeries to remove one kidney and part of another, and the treatments are ongoing and are expected though the end of January. Rylie’s been in and out of the hospital the past few months and was in the hospital again on Friday.
Updates on Rylie are on a Facebook page — Team Rylie — which is a team of friends, family and the community who have come together to show love and support to Rylie and her family during this fight against cancer. The couple also has a son, Tyson, who is 12.
As part of the fundraising efforts to assist the family, organizers are selling Team Rylie bracelets for $3 each, along with funds that are being raised from the “Race for Rylie.”
Those wanting to run or support the event can register online.
