  • Tenth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist and All-American Hannah Helker won the Sooner Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Meet Saturday and advance to the NAIA Meet Nov. 23 in Kansas.
    Helker continued her season-long winning streak, finishing off the five kilometers in 16:44, an even minute ahead of runner-up Sarah Jerotich of Wayland Baptist.
    OBU's Zach Johnson was named SAC Women's Coach of the Year.
    The Lady Bison won with 36 points, followed by Oklahoma City and Texas Wesleyan in a second-place tie with 58, Wayland Baptist at 71, John Brown with 147, St. Gregory's at 168, Northwood at 217, Science & Arts of Oklahoma at 241 and Southwestern Assemblies of God at 250.
    The winning score for the Bison came from Helker, Whitney Warfield in fifth at 18:37, Lauren Wood in seventh at 18:46, Miranda Dent in 10th at 19:08 and Johanna Kleinsasser in 13th at 19:16.
    Those five made the All-SAC team, along with Jerotich and Selene Lopez of Wayland Baptist; Katrina Nolan, Sarah Moore, Madeline Boehlke and Raechel Brown of Oklahoma City; and Brenda Felipe, Lauri Gutierrez, Jessica Davis and Maria Aguayo of Texas Wesleyan.
    OBU claimed the automatic berth and 15th-ranked Texas Wesleyan and No. 20 Oklahoma City will await a possible at-large berth.
    The NAIA Meet is Nov. 23 at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kan.

    first men's title
    Fifth-ranked Oklahoma City claimed its first Sooner Athletic Conference men's cross country championship with a 15-point win over No. 11 Oklahoma Baptist Saturday in Shawnee.
    The Stars scored 24 points to win going away, followed by OBU with 39, St. Gregory's with 86, Wayland Baptist with 109, John Brown with 146, Southwestern Assemblies of God with 158 and Texas Wesleyan with 180.
    OBU's Adam Godwin captured the individual title to stay perfect on the season, completing the eight kilometers in 24:44.
    The Stars won with Peter Koskey coming in second at 24:55, Arya Bahreini in third at 25:08, Chris Lowery in fourth at 25:25, Kyle Wardwell in seventh at 26:02 and Mackenzie Wahepah-Harris in eighth at 26:15 to finish off the winning score. Head Coach Conor Holt was voted SAC Men's Coach of the Year.
    Godwin, Koskey, Bahreini, Lowery, Wardwell and Wahepah-Harris are joined on the All-SAC Men's Cross Country team by Dominic Cabada, Gustavo Escobar and Hosea Maritim of St. Gregory's, Cameron Sprague, Caleb Wolters, Austin Germiller and Fred Titera of OBU, Cameron Woodberry of Wayland Baptist and Stephen Broadhurst of OCU.
    OCU gains the automatic berth to the NAIA National Meet, while Oklahoma Baptist seems a likely candidate for an at-large selection. If both qualify, Cabada, Woodberry, Escobar, Maratim and WBU's Marco Perez could also qualify as individual runners.
    The NAIA Meet is Nov. 23 at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kan.
