  • A total of seven Dale players finished the night in double figures as the Pirates and Lady Pirates swept Asher to start their 2013-14 basketball seasons Tuesday.

Brayden Newton paced the Lady Pirates with a team-high 18 points, and Jaelin Flewallen added a dozen as Dale topped Asher’s Lady Indians 76-30. The Dale boys got double digits from four players — including Taron Carter’s game-high 20 — as the Pirates claimed a 94-35 season-opening win.

Carter hit four of Dale’s six first-quarter shots from 3-point range, and he finished the game with six connections from beyond the arc. Jace Wilkins added 16 points for the victors, and Gunnar Hathcock and Randy Crawford contributed 12 and 10, respectively.

A total of 14 players got in on the scoring for the hosts. The Pirates (1-0) went 7-for-11 from the charity stripe and netted 11 treys for the game.

Asher, led by Tanner Andrews with 10 points, went 0-for-3 on free throws. Andrews struck twice from 3-point range, and teammate Hunter Fowler also picked up two long shots for his six points on the night.

The Dale boys led 26-5 after one quarter, and 45-17 at halftime.

The Dale girls used a 23-6 second-quarter run to lead 38-18 at the break. Taylor Thompson picked up 10 points for the Lady Pirates (1-0), including a pair of 3-point field goals.

Newton notched five 3-point field goals as the Lady Pirates went 15-for-27 (55.6 percent) from beyond the arc. Dale was 31-for-58 (53.4 percent) overall on field goals, including 16-for-31 (51.6 percent) from 2-point range.

“We shot it really good outside the arc,” said Lady Pirates’ head coach Josh Forsythe.

Flewallen also logged a pair of long-range shots and finished with three assists. Kamy Walck hit two 3-pointers and finished with eight points, and Franchansca Burley led Dale in rebounds with five.

Dani Manning liked the No. 4… she scored four points, pulled down four boards and had four each on steals and assists.

Shelby Fleming led Asher with 11 points, and teammate Haley Odell added nine.

Dale will travel to Preston Friday. The girls’ game will tip off at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ game.

Both Asher teams are now 2-1 and will go to Tupelo Friday for 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. start times.
