  • Classes; events cancelled due to weather

  • With the winter storm moving through beginning yesterday, schools and local businesses closed and will continue to stay closed today.
    Many local schools were closed yesterday in expectancy of the winter weather and classes will continue to be cancelled through today due to ice, snow and low temperatures. As of 7 p.m. Thursday, the following schools will be closed today:
    Pottawatomie County
    • Asher Public Schools
    • Bethel Public Schools
    • Dale Public Schools
    • Earlsboro Public Schools
    • Macomb Public Schools
    • Maud Public Schools
    • McCloud Public Schools
    • Shawnee Public Schools
    • Tecumseh Public Schools
    • Wanette Public Schools
    Lincoln County
    • Agra Public Schools
    • Chandler Public Schools
    • Meeker Public Schools
    • Prague Public Schools
    • Wellston Public Schools
    Oklahoma Baptist University cancelled classes yesterday. OBU will use the late start schedule for today. For schedule details, go to the Inclement Weather Policy page on OBU’s website at www.okbu.edu.
    St. Gregory’s University cancelled classes yesterday afternoon. SGU students will need to check closings today as classes could be cancelled sometime today but it was not posted before press time.
    Several local events have also been cancelled or postponed.
    The city of Shawnee on Thursday postponed the annual downtown Christmas parade to Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
    The “Cans Film Festival” has also been postponed until Dec. 12.
    Shawnee Little Theatre’s Tom Sawyer production tonight has been cancelled but will continue as planned Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Individuals with reservations for Friday night’s performance can contact the box office to reschedule at 405-275-2805 from 5:30-8 p.m. Shawnee Little Theatre will have a make up performance Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
    The Adoration: Yeshua The Reason for the Season at Liberty Baptist Church has been canceled tonight.
    First Friday Shawnee has been rescheduled for next Friday from 5-8 p.m. Participating venues along Main Street will open their doors for evening shopping, local art, live music, and special events.
    Regular venues include: Sweet Earth Studio (421 E. Main), Main Street Photo Studio & Gallery (421 E. Main), The Fifth Element (16 E. Main), Old Owl Shoppe (6 E. Main), The Doggie Spot (12A E. Main), Crow’s Main Fruit Market (730 E. Main), Kathy’s Past & Present Antique Mall (14 E. Main), and Around the World Travel (102 E. Main). Given the short notice, not all venues may have been able to reschedule.
    Page 2 of 2 - Pioneer Library System facilities closed early yesterday. The Blanchard, Newcastle and Purcell libraries closed at 3 p.m. yesterday and all other PLS hometown libraries, including Shawnee and Tecumseh closed at 4 p.m. Library officials will monitor conditions before deciding about whether or not to open today.
    The Pottawatomie County courthouse closed at 3 p.m. yesterday and will remain closed today.
