Shawnee police are searching for suspects as they investigate a shooting that left a local man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Shawnee police responded Monday night to the 1200 block of East Alice after numerous 911 calls flooded the dispatch center.
Shawnee Police Chief Russell Frantz on Tuesday identified the shooting victim as Javaughn Maurice Smith, 25.
"He was shot multiple times in the torso and face," Frantz said.
As police sealed off the area for the investigation Monday night, Smith was transported to OU Medical Center, where he underwent surgery for his injuries.
Tuesday afternoon, as police continued their probe, Smith was listed in critical but stable condition, Frantz reported.
Because doctors have Smith in a medically induced coma, Frantz said detectives have been unable to speak with him to obtain more information about what happened.
Frantz said Smith was shot near his residence. At some point during whatever unfolded there, Smith apparently tried backing out of his driveway in his car.
When police arrived, they found him injured in his vehicle, which was in the ditch, the chief said.
Police are investigating a possible motive for the shooting as they search for suspects.
"We're running down leads," Frantz said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Shawnee police at 273-2121 or the anonymous Crimestoppers tip line, 273-0989.
