Austin, Tex. — The Oklahoma Baptist swimming team finished competition at the Texas Invitational hosted by The University of Texas Saturday evening.
The Bison were the first-ever NAIA team to compete in the meet in Austin, Texas at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
OBU competed in 12 events, qualifying a swimmer for the finals in 10. Bison swimmers set several fastest times in the NAIA this year, and broke two records.
During the meet, Arizona swimmer Kevin Cordes set an American record in the 100-yard breaststroke at 50.70 seconds.
An OBU team of Logan Lassley, Daniel Ramirez, Garland Sullivan, and AJ Barbar finished eighth in the 200-yard free style relay with a time of 1:19.57.
Ramirez finished eighth and set an NAIA record in the 100-yard butterfly at 47.58, and Sullivan finished 20th with 48.80. Ramirez also set a new NAIA mark in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 47.43.
In the men's 50-yard free, Lassley finished 16th with 20.29, Barbar came in 25th with a time of 20.41, and Daniel Robbins finished 32th at 20.95.
The Bison had two teams in the 400-yard medley relay. Ramirez, Vitor da Franca, Sullivan, and Javier Sossa finished 10th at 3:16.59. Robbins, Gregory Penny, Barbar, and Andre Del Rio finished 14th with a time of 3:22.72.
In the 200-yard medley relay, OBU finished sixth with a team comprised of Ramirez, Penny, Sullivan, and Lassley with a time of 1:27.93. A team of Robbins, da Franca, Barbar, and Sossa finished 13th at 1:31.82.
Sossa finished 31st in the 200-yard free, finishing in 1:39.68.
In the 100-yard breast, da Franca finished 22nd at 55.80.
The Bison qualified two swimmers in the 200-yard breast. da Franca finished 15th, finishing in 2:00.53, and Penny finished 21st with 2:01.68.
OBU finished eighth in the final race of the night, the 400-yard free relay. Ramirez, Sossa, Robbins, and Barbar finished in 2:59.08. Lassley, Del Rio, Sullivan, and da Franca finished 16th in the race with a time of 3:06.61.
The Bison will swim one final time in 2013 when they compete in the CSCAA Swim Forum in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
