Mabee Gerrer Museum slates Community Art Day.
The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art celebrates the holidays this Saturday, Dec. 14. From 1 p.m.-3 p.m., visitors can attend a special Community Art Day held in conjunction with a sneak peak at the museum’s upcoming exhibit, Derald Swineford: Christmas on the Plains.
During this Community Art Day, participants will create wire Christmas ornaments with jewelry and wire artist Patti Eayre. Eayre is a local artist who has been designing jewelry and wire art since 1992. She attended Humboldt State University's jewelry and metalsmithing program. Currently she sells one-of-a-kind jewelry through the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art gift shop.
Community Art Day is free and open to the public. Families and participants of all ages are welcome. All supplies are provided. This event is sponsored by the Oklahoma Arts Council and Allied Arts.
Additionally, during Community Art Day, visitors will enjoy free admission to the museum’s permanent exhibits, a cookie and punch reception hosted by Friends of the MGMoA, and a special sneak peak of Derald Swineford: Christmas on the Plains, which opens fully on December 17.
Swineford, who served as chair of the art department of the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (1946-1975), treated each of his friends to a unique, hand-printed Christmas card each holiday season from 1940-1983 (except during his service in World War II). For the first time, each of these linoprints will be displayed together. The exhibit closes January 19.
The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is separate, non-profit organization located on the campus of St. Gregory’s University, 1900 W. MacArthur St. in Shawnee, and it is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free during Community Art Day activities, but is regularly $5 for adults, $4 for seniors age 65 or older, $3 for students and children ages 6 to 17, and free for children age 5 and younger.
