Cans Film Festival precedes parade.
Christmas Parade to begin at 6:30 p.m.
The annual Downtown Shawnee Christmas Parade will be held today at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Shawnee.
The parade will run along its normal route down Main Street, starting at Beard Street and Main and ending at the depot.
This year’s Grand Marshal for the parade is the Shawnee Public Library. Judges Mike McCormick, Mayor Wes Mainord and Judge John Gardner will judge the near 80 parade entries.
There are six prizes with two winners in each category. The categories include best of show, best use of theme and best performance.
The main sponsor of the parade is White’s Ace Building Center, along with other sponsors including Sonic, Sips and Shawnee Outlook.
Preceding the parade, the 27th annual “Cans Film Festival” will be held. Jones Theatres, Inc. and 10450 AM Kool Gold KGFF Radio host the annual event, which includes a special movie showing before the downtown Christmas parade to collect canned goods for the Salvation Army holiday food distribution.
Each year the theater hosts the event with KGFF to boost the Salvation Army holiday food collections and provide another event to draw people downtown before the parade.
The Hornbeck Theatre, located at 125 N. Bell, will host the event with a showing of “Despicable Me 2”. Admission to the movie is two cans of non-perishable food per person up to the theater’s 500-seat capacity.
Doors to the theater will open at 3:30 p.m. and the movie will begin at 4:15 p.m. The movie is expected to be over by 6 p.m. in time for the parade to begin.
