  • Shawnee High School announces that senior student, Kory Conaway, was recently selected as first chair trombonist in the Oklahoma Music Educator's Association's All-State Symphonic Band.

Conaway successfully passed three rounds of highly competitive auditions in order to achieve this honor. First, he passed a district level audition in early November at Ada Junior High. After the first round of auditions, he had one month to prepare a completely new, set of audition materials prior to an early December audition.
At that audition, he competed in two rounds of auditions and on his way to being named an all-state caliber musician.

"Less than 1 percent of all high school musicians in Oklahoma reach the level of all-state musician," said Shawnee Public School's Director of Bands, Kirby Swinney. "With that being said, I was not surprised at all that Kory was selected. He has worked very hard and showed unrelenting determination in his goal to be successful. He works very hard at everything he does and has high expectations for himself. I am veery honored to be his teacher."

He is the son of Dr. Keith Conaway and Kelli Schock. He studies private trombone with Dr. Jim Hansford, former OBU band director. In addition to his band commitment, Kory is also a member of the SHS swim team and maintains a very high GPA. "He is a perfect example of what all students with drive and determination can achieve," Swinney said.

Conaway will practice with the rest of the OMEA all-state band at the annual OMEA convention in January at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center prior to giving a concert as part of the convention's finale concert.
