Autopsy results are awaited as part of an investigation into the death of a McLoud man who died during a reported fight between him and his stepson.
Pottawatomie County Sheriff Mike Booth identified the man who died as Denver St. Clair, 58.
"We don't know the cause of death at this time," the sheriff said Monday afternoon, adding that investigators are awaiting the medical examiner's report as part of this probe.
Booth said it appears St. Clair and his stepson were involved in some type of fistfight Saturday night at a home in the Rustic Oaks addition, which is in rural McLoud.
"The stepson called 911," Booth said, and told dispatchers there had been a fight and something was wrong with the stepfather.
A McLoud officer and Kickapoo tribal officer, along with McLoud firefighters arrived, Booth said, where St. Clair was deceased at the scene, Booth said.
Deputies began processing that scene for evidence, Booth said, and detained the stepson for questioning. The stepson has not been arrested and no formal charges have been filed, the sheriff added.
Booth, who said they don't believe any weapons were involved in the altercation, said part of the probe includes determining whether the stepson contributed to the man's death in any way other than defending himself during the fight.
"We don't know if it was self defense or not," the sheriff said.
Booth said this incident is a tragedy for the family, especially at Christmastime.
Investigator Jimmy Brewer is the lead detective on the case, with assistance from the district attorney's task force.
