  • Sue Nelson, vice president of Shawnee Vision Bank, was recently named the 2013 Shawnee Kiwanis Citizen of the Year.
“It was a total shock,” she said, adding she’s overwhelmed.
Jimmy Gibson, past president of Shawnee Kiwanis Club, said the Citizen of the Year award goes to citizens who exhibit a sense of community, citizens who participate in public service efforts and make community contributions.
Gibson said a committee chooses the Citizen of the Year and Nelson was chosen because she fit the criteria in multiple ways.
“For years she has been very dedicated to public service,” he said.
Nelson said Shawnee means a lot to her and she tries to stay as involved as she can.
“I’ve lived here so many years and volunteered a lot,” she said.
Gibson said it is a very prestigious list of community members who are awarded each year at the annual Christmas banquet and that Nelson is a deserving citizen.
“It’s obvious she clearly loves our community,” he said.
