The annual Gardening with the Experts program is scheduled for 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Gordon Cooper Technology Center. Organized by the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce Beautification and Enhancement Committee, the program is designed to provide current information that will help gardeners get ready for spring. A continental breakfast provided by Vision Bank will be served between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
Dr. George Driever, Pottawatomie County OSU Extension Horticulture Educator, will discuss Sustainable Vegetable Gardening for Central Oklahoma during the first session of the morning. With the current emphasis on the importance of locally grown foods, this topic is very timely. Dr. Driever is a practicing vegetable gardener who speaks from experience. He received the Ph D in Horticulture from Oklahoma State University.
Casey Sharber, Myriad Botanical Gardens Horticulturist, is the second expert for this event. She will provide landscaping ideas, drawing heavily on her educational experience as well as her hands-on work with landscaping a very public garden and keeping it looking great twelve months out of the year. She is a graduate of OSU and the University of Delaware.
Those attending are invited to bring favorite gardening tips in writing to be accumulated in summary form with a copy of all tips provided to each person. The tips will be evaluated with those who submitted the top three tips receiving a prize at the close of the morning. In addition several door prizes will be presented.
Demonstrations of decorative container plantings will be given during the break between speakers. Nancy Ford and Robert Cash will provide suggestions on having an attractive arrangement for porch or patio. Guests may also visit vendor booths before the program and during the morning break.
Tickets for Gardening with the Experts are $10 and may be purchased at the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, The Shawnee Garden Center, or at the door.
This event is sponsored by the Shawnee Council of Garden Clubs, Inc., Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Vision Bank, The Kickapoo Casino, and the Shawnee Garden and Landscaping Center. First presented in 1999, this is the 15th anniversary of Gardening with the Experts in Shawnee.
